HISTORY
http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Clinton_Barton_(Earth-199999)
PERSONALITY OVERVIEW
There are two definite and distinct sides to Clint Barton. There is the SHIELD agent, who is an assassin and a spy (though more the assassin part than the spy part - Tasha's the spy in their partnership), and there is Clint himself, a "Cornball Romeo with delusions of adequacy" as someone once put it.
At his core, Clint is a decent guy. He likes to do the right thing, he doesn't like to hurt innocent people, he tries to think the best of people that he trusts. He's got a snarky sense of humor, is a huge dork, and flirts horribly with everyone. He has a soft spot for utterly horrible movies, eats all the time, lives like a single guy (ie - doesn't clean very much!). When he cares about someone, he will go to the ends of the earth for them and risk his very life doing it, without even questioning why they asked him to. He likes to push people's buttons, especially when he either likes or hates them - people he doesn't care about don't deserve the effort.
When he was younger, he wore his heart on his sleeve, and as a teenager fell in love with girls at the drop of a hat, only to be heartbroken when they either dumped or rejected him. He trusted, he cared, and he felt - all very deeply and easily. Then his mentor, the person who taught him to use a bow and the closest thing he had to a father figure, turned out to be involved in some shady dealings, and those shady dealings got his older brother killed. That was the start of Clint pulling his emotions in a little more, and after he got picked up by SHIELD he pulled them even closer to the chest. Emotions and trust were a liability, and while he will never have control of his emotions to the extent Natasha does, without an instinctive and unthinking reaction left on the surface, he does his best to keep people from seeing below the surface of professional badassery and ridiculous humor.
While the Avengers have all managed to find their ways below that surface (as evidenced by the fact that he let them meet his family), for a long time the only people he let that close were Natasha and his wife Laura. Laura was one of the last connections he had to his life before his brother died, and when Nick Fury recruited him for SHIELD, he made Nick promise to keep the existence and location of her and their young son secret from everyone. If something or someone came after him, he didn't want to risk the lives of the most important living people in his life. Not after his brother. And for a while no one at SHIELD (but Fury) had any idea there was more to him than what he let them see. Until Natasha.
Natasha was supposed to be an assignment. He was sent to kill her, and instead he decided to go severely off-mission and approach her as an ally, offering to get her an in with SHIELD and keep her from getting killed (by them, anyway). He saw something in her that he can't even put his finger on now, and took a leap of faith to trust her, believing that she could be more than the weapon she'd been made into. While Fury had earned his trust by keeping his word, Clint gave it to Natasha freely and without any reason to expect that it would be repaid, to the point that he even took her to meet his family, hoping she could feel at home and accepted and safe. And that trust paid off - he trusted Fury to keep his secrets, he trusts the Avengers to have his back, but Natasha is someone who - like his wife - he can't even lie to. When he tries, it comes out so unbelievable as to basically be an admission that he's lying. He trusts her utterly, will do anything she asks him to without question, and takes even the most ridiculous-sounding orders from her in the field, knowing that she has a plan - unless it involves leaving her behind.
Clint also has, largely as a result of being a father on top of his own wayward youth, a bit of a soft spot for young people who need guidance or looking after. He's good with kids, less good with teenagers but still has the urge to keep an eye on them. He's very protective of any young people he's happened to latch on to, though he doesn't necessarily open up about himself to them. He just wants to make sure they know there's someone who'll have their back if they need it.
While he does his best to hold himself aloof and not trust people (which he managed to succeed at for a long time, in SHIELD), Clint ultimately believes very strongly in the idea that everyone (or at least most people) have it in them to be better than they are. Part of this is because of how hard he works to be a better person. He's got a soft spot for "fixer-uppers", as his wife has said. He also has very strong feelings about what is right, and is more than willing to go against orders to do that Right Thing, such as when he first met Natasha, or when he sided with Captain America against Tony Stark and the UN's plan to have the UN run the Avengers.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
What skills does your character bring to the situation?:
- Some knowledge of planting/harvesting (he has a farm)
- Carpentry/building/repairs
- Some survival stuff (though mostly intended to be short-term)
- exceptional aim (best with bow and arrow but is basically a crack shot with any sort of projectile, even something as basic as a sling or a slingshot)
- some knowledge of how to make bows and arrows (though he's out of practice)
- a desire to help and keep spirits up
Explain how your character would react to the following:
- Discovering that their memories may have been tampered with:
Clint would not take well to that, probably getting suspicious and maybe even paranoid for a while, at least. He's had a bad experience within the past few years of his mind being messed with, and he's still sort of recovering from that.
- Having to do physical labor to survive:
When he's not doing work with the Avengers (and previously SHIELD), Clint has a small farm that he and his wife handle, and he does renovations in their house. While he'll have fewer tools and resources than he's used to, it won't be a particular hardship for him, as he does physical labor regularly anyway.
- Having to share resources with others:
Clint didn't grow up with much, and he knows well the concept of sharing what little you have between everyone, or going without so someone who needs it more can have. While he might not always agree with the distribution of resources, depending on the situation, he is not a greedy person and will try to make sure everyone has enough, or at least that everyone is lacking about the same amount.
- Being unable to leave the area:
Since he'll want to try to find a way out of here, being unable to leave the area will be frustrating. He may be a little short tempered, at least for a while, until he settles into a routine. As long as he and others are trying to figure out new ways of trying to get out, though, he should be able to keep focused and not too angry about the situation. As long as they're working on getting out, even if they don't have a way that works, he can work with that.
- Doing without modern conveniences and technology and/or being around tech more advanced than they're used to:
He is not going to be happy. Life without coffeemakers, air conditioning, water heaters, freezers, microwaves... it's not his idea of a good time. It'll be irritating and tiring and he'll probably whine about it a bit. In the end, though, he's capable of functioning, if not comfortably, without the comforts of home, and he knows it. He'll get by, and adapt.
- Being separated, possibly permanently, from loved ones and their previous life, including loss of powers, if applicable:
This is going to be the hardest part of the situation for him - not knowing if he'll ever see his wife or kids again. While it was always a possibility that he'd end up killed on an op and they'd never see him again and maybe never even know what happened to him, the assumption was always that he'd be, y'know. Dead. The way he'll handle it, though, is by thinking of this as an extended prisoner of war type situation. One day, he'll be freed or escape, and he'll be able to make it home. He won't ever let go of that hope, because if he does, it'll break something inside of him. As frustrating and impossible-seeming as it might get, he will always hold on to that kernel of hope that they'll get out of this, and go home, and then he'll see them again. He'll hold on to it even if he has nothing left to hold on to, because without it, he doesn't know how he'll cope. (Probably badly, taking unnecessary risks and not bothering to be careful about things, because what does it matter?)
WRITING SAMPLES
1. (this sample was written for comics Clint, but is, personality-wise, still applicable for MCU Clint)
Okay, this looks bad, Clint thought to himself as he hung from the edge of a roof. He and Kate had been trying to sneak up on the bastards, but they'd caught wind of them and jumped them on the roof. From the sounds of things, Kate was still giving them hell. Unfortunately, he was stuck dangling from the ledge, with no footholds to push himself back up and a graze from a bullet that wasn't the end of the world but that was impeding his ability to pull himself back up unaided.
A quick glance down confirmed that if he took this fall, he'd probably end up breaking his pelvis or something, again, and he wasn't exactly eager to re-live that experience. So instead, he just hung there, concentrating on not losing his grip before Kate could come haul him up.
"This is so not my idea of a fun way to spend a Friday night," he grumbled to himself. There was the thunk of an arrow sinking into flesh, and then a scream as one of the track suits went careening over the side of the roof, over Clint's head. "Good luck sticking the landing, bro!" Clint shouted as the guy fell. He didn't twist to see where he landed, though - best not to risk losing his grip. There was a bit more shouting, and then silence for a good half a minute before Kate's head popped into view above him.
"Hey, boss, you hanging in there?" she asked.
"Katie, I will give you a full update on my status when you help me not fall six stories onto the concrete below, okay?" he said, trying not to sound too stressed out by the fact that he was dangling from the roof and his arms were starting to go a little numb and he was really sick of falling from high places.
Kate just laughed, before grabbing his arm and bracing herself, helping to pull him back up onto the roof. He flopped onto his back and just stared up at the sky for a minute.
"Hey, Katie-bird?"
"Yeah?"
"Next time, let's not do this on the roof of a building."
